The Crazy Horse Review: Tournament Feel, Heavy Spin, and a High Ceiling

Verdict: The Crazy Horse is the highest-ceiling paddle in this group. The Pro Kevlar face and MegaGrit texture create the heaviest serve action I got from an SXY frame, but the paddle is not forgiving in a lazy way. It rewards early preparation, clean contact, and confident net timing.

Quick take

The Crazy Horse is the review I would send to a player who says, "I want the best paddle if my timing is already good." It has the ceiling, but it expects you to meet it halfway.

How I tested it

Sessions: 8 match sessions. Conditions: Four attacking doubles blocks, two windy return sessions, and repeated kick-serve targets from both deuce and ad sides.

Control paddles: Compared against The Dominator, SE Crazy Horse Ultra-Light, Carbonator Triaxial, and Carbon Hex GT with the same match ball rotation.

Durability check: The face texture still looked sharp after testing. Edge chips were minor and limited to normal sand-court contact.

Spec and price source: SXY product page, checked July 2026. Performance scores are Denys's on-sand ratings, not manufacturer claims.

How it plays, shot by shot

Serve: The best serve paddle in this set for spin shape. Kick and slice both jump more when you brush the Kevlar face cleanly.

Return and defense: Stable, but not rescuing. If your swing is late the ball floats shorter than it does with The Dominator.

Net exchanges: Excellent when your hands are set. The paddle blocks hard drives cleanly and lets you redirect without feeling vague.

Smash: Plenty of pace, especially on flat contact. Carbonator is more explosive, but Crazy Horse gives more spin and touch on the next ball.

Wind: The high-spin serve is useful in crosswind, but defensive margin is less automatic than Dominator or SE Crazy Horse.

What I liked
  • Best spin and serve action in the SXY paddle group
  • Premium face feel on blocks and redirects
  • High ceiling for advanced attackers
  • Strong blend of pop and touch when contact is clean
What I did not like
  • Expensive at $325
  • Less forgiving than The Dominator on late defense
  • Not the best choice for first-year players

Measured feel and decision factors

Serve targets: Produced the most short-angle kick serves of the test group.

Put-away pace: Finished high balls easily without needing the stiffness of Carbonator.

Error pattern: Most misses came from late defensive stabs, not attacking shots.

Who should buy it

Buy it if: Advanced attackers and tournament-minded players who already shape serves, step into overheads, and want a premium paddle that rewards skill.

Skip it if: Skip it if you need help creating margin on defense. The Dominator and SE Crazy Horse are calmer when contact gets messy.

Alternatives to consider
More forgivenessThe Dominator - Bigger margin and easier defense for less money.Faster handsSE Crazy Horse Super Ultra-Light - Same control family with lower swing effort.More raw smashCarbonator Triaxial - The more explosive but less forgiving attacking option.

FAQ

Is The Crazy Horse worth $325?

It is worth it for advanced players who can use the extra spin and touch. If you are still building contact consistency, the value is harder to justify.

Is it better than The Dominator?

It has more spin and a higher attacking ceiling. The Dominator is better for defense, comfort, and value.

Who should not buy The Crazy Horse?

First-year players, budget-sensitive buyers, and anyone who needs the paddle to cover late contact should look elsewhere first.
